With the advent of the Next Generation Science Standards to be released later this month, many questions have arisen about what they are, how to understand them, and how to implement them.

If you have questions, there is assistance out there for you. Paul Anderson, a Montana science teacher, has a website devoted to science. One of the categories is the Next Gen Science Standards. There is some good, easy-to-understand information on the videos he provides. You will probably want to begin with the introductory video and go from there.

 

NSTA Offers Opportunity for New Science Teachers

The NSTA New Science Teacher Academy is now accepting applications for its 2013-2014 program. The program is open to new teachers (those in their 2nd through 5th years of teaching) at the middle school and high school levels the opportunity to participate in the New Science Teacher Academy, a yearlong professional development and mentoring program co-founded with a grant from the Amgen
Foundation. Emphasizing quality science teaching, enhanced teacher confidence, classroom excellence, and solid content knowledge, participants (Academy Fellows) enjoy top-notch face-to-face and online support and access to comprehensive
 educational resources.  The deadline to apply is August 1, 2013.

Changes for Science Safety and your school Chemical Hygiene Plan

OSHA recently updated its Hazard Communication Standard (2012) to comply with a UN mandate called the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals (GHS). This means that schools must update their Chemical Hygiene Plan (required by the OSHA Lab Standard) and retrain all teachers who deal with hazardous chemicals such as science, art, CTE, graphics, auto, horticulture, etc. by December 1, 2013.

New Group Membership Option

The NCSLA Board recently decided to offer Group memberships to NCSLA are now available for groups of at least 10 people for up to 3 years at a discount of $5 per person off the individual rate.  Non-profit organizations and school districts are urged to take advantage of this new option.  Learn more!
