Building Capacity For State Science Education

Building Capacity in State Science Education (BCSSE) is a project of the Council of State Science Supervisors (CSSS) designed to provide sustained professional development for state science supervisors to gain fluency and utility with the NRC Framework, create communication tools to disseminate key messages from the Framework to multiple state-based audiences, and develop a state-based strategic plan for work with the Framework and dissemination and adoption of NGSS.

Successful K-12 STEM Education: Identifying Effective Approaches in STEM

The National Research Council (NRC) announces the publication of: Successful K-12 STEM Education:  Identifying Effective Approaches in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. This report recommends that science education be raised to the same level of importance as math and reading.

Science, mathematics, engineering, and technology (STEM) are fundamental aspects of everyone's lives as citizens, consumers, parents, and workers. Providing all students with access to high-quality education in STEM is important to their futures and that of the U.S. What can schools do to meet this goal for their students?

Successful K-12 STEM Education tackles this question, focusing on the science and mathematics parts of STEM and on criteria for identifying effective STEM schools and practices. Successful K-12 STEM Education gives an overview of the landscape of K-12 STEM education by considering different school models, highlighting research on effective STEM education practices, and identifying some conditions that promote and limit school- and student-level success in STEM. It can serve as a guide for those involved in K-12 education at all levels: policy makers; decision makers at the school and district levels; local, state, and federal government agencies; curriculum developers; educators; and parent and education advocacy groups.

NSTA Professional Development Literature and Resources

In 2009 the NSTA Professional Development Committee was given the task of compiling and disseminating a list of resources that give administrators the tools to plan and conduct professional development. Four key questions were addressed:
How do principals/science leaders/district supervisors know what they need for professional development (PD)?
What do professional development experiences look like and what should be included in a PD session for science educators?
How do we support teachers now that they have received PD?
Is it working?

Learning Forward (formerly the National Staff Development Council) provides a tool each month for professional development. New tools will be available each month; Descriptions of past featured tools are kept available for browsing.

The tools are selected from carefully planned resource guides. Alone, any tool cannot constitute effective professional learning. Used as part of a comprehensive learning plan that includes clear goals for educator learning based on student learning needs, opportunities to engage in collaborative learning, and ongoing support, these tools can enhance professional learning for whole faculties or teams.

AAAS Science Assessment

The American Association for the Advancement of Science has launched an innovative website with more than 600 multiple-choice test questions to help educators assess more precisely what students know about key ideas in science and -- just as importantly -- the incorrect ideas they have.

The new website, which also offers an unusually detailed picture of how middle and high school students across the United States are currently doing in science, features information on what they know and on hundreds of misconceptions they have about everything from the size of atoms to whether all organisms have DNA.
