Wednesday, October 18, 2017 at the Koury Convention Center in Greensboro

Del Ruff from the American Institute of Architects in Washington, DC will be the keynote speaker and will share "Crossing the STREAM (Strategies That Re-Engage All Minds)" by discussing techniques to engage students in formal and informal settings and Dr. Sam Houston will share the latest findings in the "STEM Scorecard Report."

This year NCDPI will not have a meeting for science supervisors Wednesday morning before NCSTA. However, the DPI team will provide updates at the NCSLA STEM Summit. We encourage all science supervisors and leaders from each LEA to attend.

Del Ruff

ruf

Del Ruff joined the American Institute of Architects in Washington D.C. Summer 2017 as the Director for K12 Initiatives. His primary responsibilities are to lead the National and International K12 Initiatives portfolio and development of work related to K12 education issues and policy as they relate to architecture. Prior to this position Mr. Ruff served as one of the thought leaders around expanded learning and afterschool practices working at the Public School Forum of North Carolina as the Director of the North Carolina Center for Afterschool. He has been a classroom educator (middle school and high school), School Improvement Chairperson, Advanced Placement Coordinator, Principal (MI), and School District Superintendent (MI). Mr. Ruff also lead the North Carolina Virtual STEM project in the federally funded Race To The Top (RTTT) grant at the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction. He is the past President of NC Science and Engineering Fair Foundation and a past Director North Carolina Science Leadership Association. Mr. Ruff’s educational service includes sitting on state, regional, and national boards on topics such as: STEM education, informal education, workforce development, and higher education. Over the course of his eighteen year career he has secured and/or managed slightly over $12 Million in grants from federal, state, and philanthropic funders around educational opportunities for all students.

His research interests are in charter school effectiveness, Underrepresented Males in STEM careers and education, Advanced Placement practice and outcomes, educational leadership, college and career preparation, school and district transformation efforts, and informal science education.

Mr. Ruff holds a Bachelor of Science in Biology from Fayetteville State University and a Master of Arts in Educational Leadership from Central Michigan University.
