Over a hundred members gathered for the afternoon session and evening reception and dinner at the Marriott Hotel in Winston-Salem for the NCSLA Fall Membership Meeting held on November 7, 2012. Dr. Stephen Pruitt, who is leading the development of the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), engaged us in the afternoon workshop, "Preparing NC for the NGSS." He gave us the facts about the timeline and the structure of the standards and delighted us with his charming personality.

Members enjoyed networking with others in similar positions during a Job-Alike session. Groups gathered ideas for how they would prepare of the NGSS. Some common ideas among the groups include incorporating more technology in instruction; planning professional development to include new thinking and process skills,; and addressing content, instruction, and practices in current standards that will transition to NGSS.

The reception and dinner followed the professional development session. Dr. Patricia Simmons, Retiring President of the National Science Teachers Association and Chair of the Department of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Education at North Carolina State University, honored us with the after-dinner presentation. Dr. Simmons engaged us with the topic, "Teaching the E in STEM."

NCSLA is most grateful for the generous support of its sponsors of the event: Carolina Biological Supply Company (H&E Gatling Outstanding Science Leadership Award), Frey Scientific (reception), Fisher Science Education (dinner), Vernier Software and Technology (luncheon), and the NC Science, Mathematics, and Technology Education Center (refreshments). Please remember to support these sponsors when you are making your purchasing choices.
