Last week, the NC Senate released their budget that eliminated all funding such to dismantle all of their services and shut their doors permanently. The NCSLA board met via phone conference on May 23rd and voted to collectively demonstrate our support for the continued funding of the North Carolina Center for the Advancement of Teaching (NCCAT). NCCAT is a novel and unique teacher professional development program that serves the professional learning needs of all K-12 teachers in our state. In the State budget, it is a small program ($3 million).
The NCSLA Board decided to write a general letter of support and rally the support of our membership. Here is how you can help save NCCAT:
- Sign the Petition on Change.org. There you can view a video on NCCAT and read other individuals messages of support.
- Reach out on your social media networks. Ask other teachers and professionals to join the cause to save NCCAT.
a. Please retweet NCSLA's campaign on Twitter @NCScienceLeader and use the #NCCAT
b. Please repost on Facebook at NCSciTeach
c. Please see the NCSLA website for more information! http://www.ncsla.net/
- Write personal letters to the Education Appropriation Committee. Express how NCCAT offers high-quality professional development that is essential for helping teachers adjust to new standards, use digital resources effectively, and teach all students at high levels.
- Place a phone call to the House and Senate member's office and ask to talk to the Education Staffer. Discuss why NCCAT is important to the teachers and students of their constituency. Be specific to what services they provide and thank them for time, consideration, and being a supporter of NC education. Download this spreadsheet of key members of North Carolina Legislators.

Time is short; the NC House Representatives will be considering the NC Senate budget this week. It is likely they will go to conference in the first week of June and complete their budget negotiations by June 14th. The budget will be final by June 30th, so please do not delay!
Thank you for your time and dedication to exceptional education programs in North Carolina.
