NCScienceFestival logoThe 2018 NC Science Festival is going to be bigger than ever before with a full month of science! We need your help to bring engaging science events to all of North Carolina, make sure to submit your event requests or sign up to be one of our volunteer scientists. Help us bring fun, science-filled activities to all of North Carolina. The North Carolina Science Festival is an initiative of Morehead Planetarium and Science Center. The North Carolina Science Festival is a member of the Science Festival Alliance.

 

High school science teachers in North Carolina are encouraged to apply for the 2018 NIEHS Science, Teachers and Research Summer (STaRS) Experience. STaRS is a two-week professional development (PD) program, designed and conducted by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS).  Applications are due by 11:59 p.m. on Wednesday, March 14, 2018. The goals of the PD are to enhance participants’ understanding of basic research in environmental/biomedical sciences; and to enable participants to transfer knowledge received from this program into classroom applications and better serve their students, including those from underserved populations. The program will run from Monday, July 9, to Friday, July 20

 

Western NC

Regional Science Leadership is preparing for a great year in 2018! On January 20th at Newton Conover Middle School, EdCamp STEM West will be hosting its second annual event. All stakeholders with an interest in STEM Education are invited. This FREE event in an “Unconference” in which the participants are in charge of the program and discussion. It is truly individualized professional learning! If interested in attending please register online.

Another event is the 1st Annual STEM Trek! The North Carolina Science Festival Event will be held at the SALT (Science, Art, Literature, Together) Block in Hickory on April 21st. Community groups including school clubs, scouts, businesses, etc. will be hosting tables with hands-on STEM activities to educate the community about STEM careers in our area. The event is free to the community. If interested in hosting a table (no-cost) register online.

There will be an opportunity for Science Action Club Professional Development in early 2018. Application links will be distributed soon by NC Girls STEM Collaborative. Science Action Club was founded in 2011 by the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco. It is a nationwide program for middle school youth in out-of-school time, designed to transform environmental education at scale. Through games, projects, and hands-on citizen science, youth in SAC investigate nature, document their discoveries, connect with scientists, and design strategies to protect our planet. Educators receive professional development training on SAC kits, guidebooks, and best practices for teaching science in the informal learning environment.  In 2016-2017, SAC engaged 15,000 youth and 1,600 educators through 750 clubs and 215 cities in 17 states across the country. Southern NC

Charlotte is hosting the 13th annual K - 12 STEM Conference at UNCC on January 3, 2018  from 8AM -4PM.  The Center for STEM of UNC Charlotte meets the needs of the surrounding schools to improve K-12 mathematics, science, and engineering education in North Carolina. Its mission is to promote a regional vision for STEM education and outreach, to increase capacity in leadership, and to facilitate collaborative partnerships for addressing STEM priorities for PreK-16.  Download conference Infromation and a conference flyer
