Eastern Region Elementary Science Olympiad.

At JH Rose on March 18th the 4th Regional Eastern Elementary Science Olympiad event was held.  They were approximately 325 students competing on 19 teams from 15 different schools or school-type organizations (2 homeschool groups).  There were 15 Varsity teams and 4 JV teams.  Over 80 volunteers and 20 event leaders donated their time and efforts.  Medals were awarded to top 5 finishers in each event for Varsity and the top finisher for each event in JV.  In the four years this tournament has been going on it has grown from 6 teams to 19 teams and are close to out-growing our facility at JH Rose.

The Pitt Pirates Robotics Team continues to compete.

PIRATES Teachers meet on March 25th for professional development exploring the estuary of Eastern NC.

piratesThe PIRATES grant Preparing and Inspiring Readiness to Teacher Excellence in Science is part of Dr. Tammy Lee’s research start up grant.  The research is focused on how beginning teachers using a systems thinking approach to their lesson planning and teaching. The teachers spend a week exploring a particular ecosystem and developing instruction around a particular system in their curriculum.  The lessons are implemented during the academic year and follow up sessions are held for reflection and planning next steps.

On March 25th teachers met to explore the estuary of Washington, N.C. and to plan for the summer institute.
