Sebastian Byers - Equity & Diversity Chair
Sebastian Byers is a Program Experience Manager for the national non-profit Makers+Mentors Network, a STEM Initiative of Citizen Schools. His role in Maker+Mentors Network is to support 32 Americorps VISTA Maker Fellows in their service year. Makers + Mentors Network focuses on uplifting STEM mentorship and maker-centered learning as essential tools to building a stronger and more diverse workforce. Before embarking on this pivot in education leadership, Sebastian was a science teacher with Union County Virtual in Monroe, North Carolina. He taught Earth and Environmental Science, AP Environmental Science, Biology, AP Biology, and Anatomy & Physiology. He also taught science for over five years in both public and private schools in North Carolina. His passion for teaching continues as he keeps his classroom lens by teaching AP Biology for the Center for Talented Youth at Johns Hopkins University.
Sebastian has been recognized with several distinguished awards including being selected 2018-20 PBS Digital All-Star, North Carolina PBS Digital Innovator 2017, and as a finalist for NABT (National Association of Biology Teachers) Beginning Biology Teacher of the Year award. He is a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh. He received his teaching certification from UNC Charlotte and his Master of Educational Leadership from Queens University of Charlotte. Sebastian has been featured in a recent PBS blog on Climate Change. He was a panelist for the PBS Climate Conversations webinar series (Sept-Oct 2017) featuring Frontline/Inconvenient Sequel producers and NASA Climatologists and other PBS Science properties. Sebastian is a master teacher trainer for UNC-TV and an NC DPI Digital Ambassador. He is a North Carolina National Science Leadership Association DEI committee chair, a member of Kappa Delta Pi Educational Honors Society, and a ListenWise Digital Advocate. Sebastian enjoys family time, cycling, kayaking, hiking, and model rocketry.
