As we begin a new year, there are some important NCSLA events that we need to share with you.
The NCSLA Spring Summit on Science Education is scheduled for Saturday, April 6th in Durham, NC. Alisa Wickliff, Past President, has a wonderful and valuable professional learning experience planned for you on that day that will rival the one she planned this past November.
The theme for our Spring Summit is “PBLs All the Way”. We will have a great speaker and several science educators who will be sharing plenty of ideas for projects and problems that can be used across all levels of education to get students working cooperatively as they use higher-order skills to create solutions.
In addition, we are planning to offer valuable professional experiences focused on science educators who serve a variety of roles. So, if you are a lead science teacher, science coordinator/coach, curriculum specialist, university educator or informal science educators, we plan to have something special for you. More information will be placed on our website soon.
Also, put November 13, 2019 on your calendar for the NCSLA Fall Summit. This event will be in Winston-Salem.
It is with a sad heart that I announce our Executive Director, Dr. Pat Shane, will be stepping down from that position as of June 1, 2019. The Board will begin discussing how to move forward after such a great loss at its January Board meeting. As many of you know, Pat was a science teacher for many years, Science Coordinator in the Chapel Hill-Carrboro District, and Associate Director of the Center for Mathematics and Science Education at UNC-Chapel Hill. As a founding member of NCSLA, Pat has served continuously in various capacities on the NCSLA Board since 1993 and as its Executive Director since 2005 (the first three along with Ernest Bibby). There is no way we can find anyone who cares as much about NCSLA and who is as dedicated to strengthening the organization as Pat. We will provide a more complete summary of Pat’s accomplishments at a later date.
Please help us in wishing Pat well as she finally retires! Although we know she will never fully retire from science education!
Look for more detailed announcements about the Spring Summit on Science Education on our website and plan to join us in Durham on April 6th.
HAPPY NEW YEAR!
